Native American citizens in California  maintain a vibrant and varied social history, one which continues to have a tangible impact on the local culture

Background

California has the second largest Native American population in the United States, with over forty tribes currently seeking federal recognition. In the past, multiple European countries, such as Spain and Germany, attempted to colonise the California area, eventually leading to significant conflict, and even genocides in the area.

California Native Americans have, throughout their history, spoken a wide variety of languages, with over 300 dialects and roughly 100 distinct languages having been identified. Traditional cultural activities of Californian Native Americans included basket weaving, rock art and dance.

Today

Today, most Native Americans live in cities, having been relocated as the result of an aggressive integration policy pursued by the US government. These challenges aside, their interests are represented by groups such as the American Indian Movement

Ultimately, Native Americans remain a crucial part of the Californian cultural environment, with a deeply fascinating history.
