Happy International Women’s Day from everyone on the STAND News Team!

International Women’s Day (IWD) was first officially celebrated on 8 March by the United Nations during International Women’s Year in 1975. The earliest women’s day was observed in the United States on 28 February 1909, as a way of honouring garment workers’ strike, where women protested poor working conditions in New York. Since then, IWD has evolved into a global phenomenon, celebrated in countries across the world as recognition of women’s achievements, supporting women’s rights and building support for women’s participation in politics, economics, and science.

The United Nations Charter, signed in 1945, was the first international document supporting equality between women and men. In 2016, the UN set into force the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which built on the success of the Millennium Development Goals, and specifically outlined Gender Equality as a global initiative.
